The Studio D’Artisan “Awa Sho-Ai Kakishibu” Selvedge Jeans celebrate Japan’s rich dyeing tradition through the fusion of Awa Sho-Ai (阿波正藍) indigo and Kakishibu (柿渋) persimmon dye. The Awa Sho-Ai method, dating back to the Edo period, uses natural fermentation to produce deep, complex hues that evolve beautifully with wear. Each fabric is dyed, aired, and dried repeatedly, then washed around 30 times to achieve a rich, balanced tone.
Kakishibu dye is applied to the weft yarns using tennen shibori (natural sun dyeing), where sunlight oxidizes the persimmon tannins to create a warm, aged character. The thick, slub-textured yarns enhance the hand feel, resulting in a structured, artisanal selvedge denim with timeless appeal.
