A rare expression of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, the Studio D’Artisan 1914 Amami Oshima Mud-Dyed Sashiko Jeans combine rugged durability, heritage textiles, and centuries-old natural dyeing techniques.

Crafted from 17oz Bushu sashiko cloth, the jeans feature a distinctive textured weave originally developed for warmth and reinforcement. Sashiko textiles have long been valued in Japan for their strength and resilience, and the same qualities that made them suitable for traditional workwear, kendo, and judo uniforms are carried into this modern denim-inspired silhouette.

The rich brown color is achieved through the traditional Amami Oshima mud-dye technique, a meticulous process unique to the island of Amami Oshima. Natural dye extracted from the native Teech tree (wheel tree) is combined with iron-rich mud sourced from geological layers formed over 1.5 million years ago. Through repeated dyeing and oxidation, the fabric develops a deep, warm tone with subtle variations that can only be created through natural materials and craftsmanship.

Based on Studio D’Artisan’s classic SD-101 model, the jeans feature a regular straight silhouette that balances comfort and timeless style. Natural nut buttons complete the design, adding an authentic finishing touch to this handcrafted Japanese piece.
