Introducing the regular-fit shirt George in the exceptional Dry Ace Selvage denim - a remarkable 14.2oz fabric featuring a rustic texture and a deep, red-cast indigo tone. Crafted by the renowned Shinya Mills in Okayama, Japan, this textile exemplifies the art of perfecting imperfection in selvage denim.
The story behind Dry Ace Selvage is as captivating as the fabric itself. It all began with a no-name vintage pair of jeans, believed to be from the 1950s, discovered in a secondhand shop somewhere in the United States. Worn, heavily faded, and - most importantly - with an incredible texture, the jeans made their way to Japan, where the denim was meticulously reverse-engineered down to the finest detail.
Reverse engineering denim is a hallmark of the artisanal Japanese denim industry. Dry Ace Selvage stands as a prime example of this craftsmanship and reflects the uniquely collaborative spirit that defines much of Japan’s premium denim production. The highly slubby yarns are spun by Yamachu Mengyo Co. Ltd. in Osaka. The warp yarns, dyed with 20 dips in pure indigo by Kaihara Co. Ltd. in Hiroshima, result in a deeply saturated surface with a strikingly large, undyed core. Finally, the fabric is woven under low tension on vintage shuttle looms at Shinya Mills in Okayama. The guiding principle: Do what you do best. The outcome reflects exceptional craftsmanship at every stage of denim production.
The distinct character of Ace arises from its thick, irregular yarns, the rich indigo dyeing, and the low-tension weaving process - all contributing to its uniquely robust aging potential. Over time, the indigo rubs off the yarn surface, highlighting the slub patterns, especially vertically. When - or if - the denim is washed, the yarns subtly realign, softening the vertical texture and creating a rustic crosshatch with a coarse salt-and-pepper effect. Notably, the saturated surface allows a unique development: with the first wash, the indigo transfers to the white weft, deepening the overall tone. Through repeated washing, the indigo gradually fades to brighter blues, while deeper hues remain preserved along seams and folds.
Thanks to its unparalleled fading properties, Ace stands among the finest Japanese selvage denims available - now offered in the form of the George shirt.
