The Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge is a 12.5oz Japanese selvedge denim inspired by the vibrant traditions of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos. Woven in Okayama, Japan on vintage shuttle looms, the fabric is made from 100% Mexican upland cotton and features rope-dyed short slub yarns that create a distinctly textured surface. With wear, the slub construction develops dramatic, high-contrast vertical fades, giving the denim a unique character shaped by the wearer.
A multicolor selvedge edge draws inspiration from traditional Mexican sarape blankets, adding a vivid detail that connects the fabric back to its Mexican roots. Contrast stitching, silver metallic hardware, and a vegetable-tanned leather patch and pocket flasher complete the design, with both featuring original artwork by Mexico City tattoo artist José Ruiz, aka Koopa.
Koopa’s artwork depicts the bat, a powerful symbol within Día de los Muertos and ancient Mesoamerican mythology. The bat represents Camazotz, the Mayan bat god or “death bat,” and is associated with darkness, the afterlife, and rebirth. As an underworld guardian and symbol of transformation, the bat reflects the deeper themes of death and renewal at the heart of the tradition.
