During the WWII the deck or N-1 jacket was an integral part of the US Navy uniform. All men who - regardless of temporary weather conditions - were obliged to do duty on deck loved the functional jacket as a welcome addition to the heavy, rather tight-fitting pea coat. This was also worn as service clothing, but was not very suitable on deck in very bad weather. Thanks to the robust fabric, the so-called jungle cloth, a water-repellent fabric in hollow weft weave with rib, the N-1 was wind and rain-repellent and very durable. The heavy lining provided the necessary warmth and a good temperature balance. The sleeves with inner ribbed cuffs made of wool were cut extra long, as it was not possible to wear gloves for some functions on deck. At the same time, the cuffs were protected against wear. The first jackets were in navy blue - later they switched to a variant in khaki or, more precisely, light OD (light olive drab).
The N-1 Jacket was used from the 1940s to 1960s. Due to the timeless look, the most comfortable uniform jackets in the military. The successor, the A2, which was built in the early 1960s, is still on ships of the US Navy find. Most of the top jackets had the typical "U.S.N" branding. Without exception, they belonged to the ship and were function-bound, which is why a reference to the ship and the activity was also stamped on many deck jackets.
